I started getting paid to hike \u2013 or rather, to write about my hiking adventures \u2013 when I was 23.<\/p>\n

Now, 35 years and upwards of 34,000 trail miles later, I have many great memories, countless stories in print (including hundreds of reviews and stories here<\/a> at Gear Institute), and several creaky joints \u2013 my knees being the worst.<\/p>\n

The last few years have been wrought with stiff knees after each strenuous hike, and frequently during the later parts of each hike. Then this summer, the folks at NRG sent me a couple of new gear items to field test and review.<\/p>\n

The McDavid NRG Springe Hinge Knee<\/strong> Over Wrap<\/strong> and the McDavid NRG Spring Hinge Knee Brace<\/strong> have been game changers!<\/p>\n

The Over Wrap fits comfortably over pants \u2013 I used it over heavy canvas work pants even \u2013 and securely embraces the knee. The Over Wrap provides good forward flex thanks to the incorporation of a polymer spring hinge on either side of the knee. Yet the snug wrap prevents lateral movement to protect the knee joint.<\/p>\n

NRG recommends the Over Wrap for moderate to major joint instabilities and for those recovering from sprains or repair work\/rehabilitation efforts.<\/p>\n

For more serious support, Spring Hinge Knee Brace brings additional support by way of cinch straps at top and bottom of the brace to firmly lock the support device into your leg structure.<\/p>\n

Personally, if found the Over Wrap perfectly suited to my achy knees, and the while the Knee Brace was a great, comfortable fit, it proved to be a bit more than I needed.<\/p>\n
